Knot Smith officially began Smith Sales Company on September 11, 1980. He was one Salem County's more colorful characters, drawing crowds from miles around with his entertaining style and showmanship. He would often coin phrases like " Think of the stories you can tell your grandkids about this wonderful thing you bought here today " and " Nothing is junk, it's all tenderly used merchandise " and Most famously " It's only worth what someone is willing to pay ". He was a good ole' boy,  he always had a funny story or two before a sale, It made the crowd feel more like a family gathering. Once the sale started, right to business,  clear and crisp if need be. Afterwards, he'd always give anyone a hand to help move things around, and of course, More Stories. Knot's auctions were a great day out, even when it was rough, it was still a good time.
